Ashley Reeves went missing on April 27, 2006. The 17-year-old was supposed to arrive home before 10, but she never did. Her parents became so concerned after she did not receive any calls or texts that they reported the issue to the police.
Although the first one to be interrogated was her boyfriend, he did not know her whereabouts. Then, police got the lead that Sam Shelton was the last person to see her. They called him to the police station for interrogation.
He changed his statement several times during the interrogation, leading the police to believe he knew something about Ashley’s abduction. Finally, after 12 hours of interrogation, Shelton said what he did to her.
They were confronting each other since Ashley wanted to break up with him. During the conflict, the enraged Shelton put her in a chokehold and hauled her out of the car.
She tried to escape his clutch and struggled for a while before she passed out. He panicked when he discovered he had snapped her neck and pulled her into the woods.
He then used his hands to strangle her. He took his hands away from her, but she continued to breathe. He then wrapped his belt around her neck and pulled as hard as possible, using his leg as a brace until the belt snapped.
He choked her for the third and final time after it snapped, believing she was dead. But she was paralyzed and passed out because of the injuries. He then left her in the woods.
After telling the investigators what he had done to her, he showed the police the place where he had abandoned her. Unfortunately, they took some time to find her because of the rain, and Shelton said he had forgotten the exact location.
After some time, they found her and believed she had died, but she moved. She was immediately taken to the hospital and was in an induced coma. The photos of her recovery from her injuries are still there online.
But thanks to her courage and strength, she could return to her feet a few months later and even completed high school a year later.
Is Ashley Reeves Still Paralyzed?
Ashley Reeves was strangled three times before the offender left her, thinking she had died. However, she was paralyzed because of the severe injuries to her neck.
She was taken to the hospital immediately after the officers found her in the woods. She remained in an induced coma for a while and even lost some of her memory after the incident.
All she could recall was the fight they had that day. The recovery phase was difficult for her as she had forgotten many things, even basic things like eating or moving.
Thus, she had to relearn how to communicate, eat, and move her limbs. The doctors had told her parents that there was a chance that she would not make it, or it may take a long time before she was back to her old self.
